McCain's Multivariate Image

A recent NYT Article "The Making (and Remaking) of McCain" is a must read. The article attempts to respond to the questions raised in our discussions about the shifting nature of McCain's attempts to win the image battle in the media and the minds of his voters.

Here's a nice hook to lure you in:

“For better or for worse, our campaign has been fought from tactic to tactic,” one senior adviser glumly acknowledged to me in early October, just after Schmidt received authorization from McCain to unleash a new wave of ads attacking Obama’s character. “So this is the new tactic.”

In a battle for this weeks media coverage at 8:57 AM today in Cleveland, Ohio McCain stood on a stage with seven economic experts and two Governors to unveil what appears to be a new image (re)-creation for the campaign. The McCain/Palin logo which for weeks has had the "Country First" statement around it has been altered to "Jobs for America."

As far as I can tell this speech contained little new material. McCain is now claiming that we are on the brink of a recession and Obama will make it "even deeper."

What I believe is a new proposal: "If you buy stocks and hold it for a year your tax investment will be cut in half."

CNN's Immediate:

1. There was nothing new.

2. It was a surprise announcement.

3. He was trying to show that he has a round table of economic experts that will help him turn the economy around.
