The clothes make the candidate?

Here's an interesting commentary on Palin's somewhat (?) pricey wardrobe.

It's not going to convince me not to dress up as Eleanor Roosevelt for Halloween as I'd planned, but it does bring up an interesting point about the double standard for women in the public eye.

This may be the first time I have agreed 100% with someone on CNN.

I have heard a lot of people making a big deal over this issue. But I don't understand why it's a big deal. If Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama are wearing designer clothes to debates and such, shouldn't Palin as well? Does this surprise people in the media?

Personally, I feel like it comes down to one issue: at this point, there is virtually nothing that Palin can do to win even an ounce of favor in the eyes of her critics. We discussed how many think it was not a good idea for her to do the SNL sketches on Saturday night. But if she had turned down the offer or not done it for any other reason, she would have received just as much criticism. She can't win either way. If she walked around in cheap clothes, the media would criticize her for not looking professional (or find some other criticism of her based on her clothing choices). Disagreeing with what she stands for, or feeling she is unqualified is one thing. But why waste time talking about an issue that doesn't matter. They all wear expensive clothes. Their spouses wear expensive clothes. At this point in such an important race, let's not start focusing on (as the blog describes it) "peripheral" issues.

This might be the only issue that Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton could agree on.
